ROBERT

“The judge, he said, ‘It seems more like we are worried about the rehabilitation of the juvenile instead of the severity of the crime.’ He said, ‘I don’t think he is able to be rehabilitated. He is unsalvageable.’”

This short film shares the story of a young man who is incarcerated at the Shelby County Division of Corrections. He was transferred to criminal court at the age of 15, and he has spent the past four years in adult detention centers as a youthful offender. His involvement with the Incarcerated Youth Leadership Program has allowed him to give presentations out in the community, under special supervision by SCDC officers, and with permission from the Shelby County Sheriff's Office.

This film screened at festivals in 2017-2018, and at the National Civil Rights Museum - once as part of the MLK50 commemoration, and once before Ava DuVernay's 13TH. To celebrate Youth Justice Action Month 2018, ROBERT is available via limited release to watch for free on Vimeo and on this website.
